FAQ
An 8-ohm rating describes a speaker’s nominal electrical impedance, measured in ohms. It is a reference value rather than a constant: impedance varies with the frequency of the audio signal. You can use this rating when checking compatibility with an amplifier or AV receiver.
Bookshelf speakers advertised with an 8-ohm rating are typically passive, meaning they need an external amplifier or receiver. Powered bookshelf speakers have built-in amplification and usually list their audio inputs rather than an impedance requirement for an external amplifier.
Passive bookshelf speakers connect to an amplifier’s speaker outputs using speaker wire. Depending on the terminals, connections may accept bare wire, banana plugs or spade connectors. Each speaker’s positive and negative terminals connect to the corresponding terminals on its amplifier channel.
Two-way describes a speaker design that divides audio frequencies between two types of drivers, usually a tweeter and a woofer, using a crossover. Bass-reflex describes an enclosure with a port. These terms refer to different aspects of construction, so a bookshelf speaker can be both two-way and bass-reflex.
In a stereo system, a pair of bookshelf speakers connects to the left and right amplifier channels. In a home theatre system, bookshelf speakers can serve as front left, front right or surround channels connected to an AV receiver. The receiver’s specifications should list support for the speakers’ nominal impedance.
