FAQ
LED TVs use an LCD panel with LED backlighting. QLED TVs also use LED backlighting but add a quantum-dot layer to produce colour. Both types can include smart TV features and support HDR formats, depending on the model.
Look for a smart TV platform that supports your preferred streaming apps, along with features such as voice search, screen mirroring and built-in Wi-Fi. App availability and account requirements vary by platform, and some streaming services require a separate subscription.
Common HDR formats include HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. HDR10 uses static metadata, while HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support dynamic metadata that can vary throughout a programme. To watch a particular HDR format, the TV, content and any external playback device must support it.
HDMI inputs connect gaming consoles, streaming devices and Blu-ray players. Check that the TV has enough inputs for the devices you plan to connect. If you want features such as variable refresh rate or auto low latency mode, confirm support on both the TV and console rather than relying on the HDMI version alone.
Common connection options include HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC and optical audio. HDMI eARC supports certain audio formats that standard ARC does not, but both the TV and audio device must support the connection and format. Some TVs also offer Bluetooth audio; compatibility varies by model.
