Start with your exact device model and its manufacturer's backup power requirements. Check running and startup power, voltage, frequency, waveform, connector type, and allowable transfer time. Then confirm that the backup manufacturer's instructions permit your intended medical use. Your equipment provider can help assess runtime and build an outage plan; matching wattage alone is not enough.
A UPS is designed to provide backup power when the electrical supply fails, with transfer time depending on its design. Medical-grade models may include hospital-grade plugs, outlets, and model-specific safety compliance. A portable power station stores energy for use away from an outlet, but may not switch automatically or meet medical-use requirements. Neither category guarantees compatibility with a particular device.
Some CPAP machines support manufacturer-approved external batteries or other backup sources. Ask your CPAP manufacturer or equipment provider which options and cables are approved for your exact model. Humidifiers and heated tubing can increase power use substantially, so check runtime for your usual settings rather than assuming a battery will last all night.
Runtime depends on the equipment's actual power draw, battery capacity and condition, conversion losses, and operating settings. For a UPS, consult the manufacturer's runtime chart at your expected load; VA and watt ratings describe output capacity, not hours of operation. For a power station, watt-hours divided by watts gives only an ideal estimate, with actual runtime usually lower. Have your equipment provider help verify the setup safely and allow a reserve for unexpected delays.
No. Pure sine wave output may be one requirement, but it does not establish medical compatibility or life-support approval. Transfer time, electrical isolation, grounding, alarms, and other device-specific requirements can also matter. Confirm the complete setup with both manufacturers.
Do not assume they can. Oxygen concentrators and life-support devices need a device-specific backup plan from the equipment provider and care team. Use only power sources explicitly approved for the intended equipment and application, and follow any manufacturer exclusions. Medical-grade labelling alone does not establish life-support suitability. If a power failure puts someone's health in immediate danger, call 911.
