FAQ
A belt-drive turntable uses a belt to connect the motor to the platter, while a direct-drive turntable has a motor that turns the platter directly. Belt-drive models are common for home listening, while direct-drive models are often associated with DJ setups.
A turntable’s phono signal needs a phono preamp stage before reaching a standard audio input. Some turntables have a built-in phono preamp; others require an external unit or an amplifier or receiver with a phono input. A switchable built-in preamp lets you choose between phono and line-level output.
With a manual turntable, you position the tonearm and lift it when playback ends. A semi-automatic model handles some end-of-playback functions, such as lifting or returning the tonearm. A fully automatic model typically positions the tonearm to start playback and returns it when the side finishes.
A turntable with Bluetooth audio output can pair with compatible Bluetooth speakers or headphones. Check whether the model supports Bluetooth output rather than input only, since Bluetooth input generally lets the turntable’s speakers play audio from another device. Wired connections may also be available.
Most albums play at 33⅓ RPM, while many singles play at 45 RPM. Support for both speeds covers much of a typical vinyl collection. Older 78 RPM discs require a turntable that supports that speed and usually a stylus designed for their grooves.
