FAQ
Passive noise cancelling, also called passive noise isolation, refers to the physical barrier formed by earcups or ear tips. Unlike active noise cancellation (ANC), it does not use microphones and electronic processing to generate opposing sound waves.
Passive noise isolation is commonly associated with closed-back over-ear headphones and in-ear headphones with ear tips. Closed-back models have enclosed earcups, while in-ear models create a seal at the ear canal.
Passive noise isolation itself does not require batteries. Wired headphones without powered features can operate through a compatible audio connection, while wireless models need power for Bluetooth connectivity and any built-in electronic features.
Yes. Passive noise isolation is a feature of the headphones’ physical design, so it can be present in both wired and wireless models. Connection options may include a 3.5 mm plug, USB-C or Bluetooth, depending on the headphones.
Depending on the model, features may include a built-in microphone, volume controls, playback buttons and voice assistant support. Some wireless headphones also offer multipoint Bluetooth for connecting to more than one device. These features are separate from passive noise isolation.
