FAQ
Two common types are filament and resin 3D printers. Filament printers, often called FDM or FFF printers, build objects by depositing melted plastic in layers. Resin printers, including SLA and MSLA models, use light to harden liquid resin one layer at a time.
Common filament materials include PLA, PETG, ABS and flexible TPU. Compatibility depends on the printer’s extruder, nozzle, heated bed and supported temperature settings. Some printers also support specialty blends, such as wood-filled or carbon-fibre-filled filament, with suitable hardware.
STL and 3MF are common formats for 3D models. STL describes a model’s surface geometry, while 3MF can store additional information, such as units and material assignments. Slicing software converts the model into instructions in a format supported by the printer, such as G-code for many filament printers.
Slicing software divides a digital model into layers and prepares the instructions a printer follows. It lets you adjust settings such as infill, supports and print speed. When choosing a 3D printer, check whether it supports your preferred slicer or uses dedicated software.
Depending on the model, 3D printers may accept print files through USB drives, memory cards, a direct USB connection, Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Some also offer app-based controls or network monitoring. Check whether network features work locally or require an online account.
