Best Affordable SSDs for PS5

A growing game library can fill console storage surprisingly quickly, especially when a few favourites stay installed for regular multiplayer nights. The Best Affordable SSDs for PS5 bring together options for players who want more room without letting an upgrade take over their gaming budget. Extra storage means fewer decisions about which game to delete before starting something new, whether that’s a sprawling adventure, a sports title shared with family, or the game your friends always return to on weekends. For a household with several players, the benefit is especially practical: everyone can keep more of their own games ready to launch. Affordability is about more than the lowest upfront price, though. A drive with enough capacity for your usual rotation, suitable performance, and a compatible heatsink may offer better value than a cheaper option that needs an additional purchase or fills up sooner than expected.

Compatibility is the first detail to check when choosing an internal SSD for PS5. The console’s expansion slot requires a compatible PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD; an M.2 label alone does not guarantee that a drive will work. A sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s is recommended, and the drive needs effective heat dissipation through a heatsink or another suitable cooling structure. Check the full dimensions with the heatsink attached, since the complete assembly must fit inside the expansion bay. An included heatsink can simplify the purchase, but it still needs to meet the console’s fit requirements. Capacity deserves just as much attention as speed. A 1 TB drive can give a smaller library useful breathing room, while 2 TB may be a more comfortable choice for players who keep several large games installed alongside their favourites. Game sizes and update requirements vary, so leave some room beyond what your current library occupies. Comparing the cost per terabyte can help put sale prices into perspective, but paying for space you are unlikely to use is not always the best bargain.

It also helps to distinguish an internal expansion SSD from a USB-connected external SSD before buying. Compatible internal M.2 storage lets you install and play PS5 games directly from the added drive. External USB storage can hold PS5 games, but those games must be transferred back to console storage or compatible internal M.2 storage before they can be played; supported PS4 games can run directly from compatible USB extended storage. That difference matters when the goal is a larger, ready-to-play library rather than somewhere to keep games between sessions. An affordable internal SSD can be a thoughtful birthday or holiday gift for someone who regularly clears space before a download, provided you confirm their console model and existing storage setup first. For your own console, picture an ordinary evening: a new game waiting to install, friends getting online, and no desire to spend the first part of the night rearranging storage. Choosing the right capacity can make that routine easier. Before settling on a drive, compare warranty coverage, installation requirements, and whether cooling hardware is included. Expansion storage is primarily a way to keep more games accessible, so prioritise compatibility and useful capacity rather than expecting an SSD upgrade to improve frame rates or picture quality.
