Best PS5 Additional Storage

A growing game library can fill a console faster than expected, especially when a few large releases, regular updates, and downloadable expansions all need room at once. The Best PS5 Additional Storage selection brings together options for making that space easier to manage, whether you keep a handful of favourites installed or like having something ready for every kind of gaming night. Extra storage is particularly useful in a shared household, where one person’s sports season, another’s sprawling adventure, and a collection of multiplayer games can quickly compete for capacity. When choosing a drive, think about the games you actually keep rather than simply the number you own: installation sizes vary considerably, and a library of smaller titles has different needs from one built around large, frequently updated releases. Leaving some spare capacity also gives you room for the next download without turning a quiet evening on the couch into a round of deciding what to delete.

The most important distinction is between storage that lets you play PS5 games directly and storage used to hold them until you are ready to move them back. A compatible internal M.2 SSD expands the space available for installing and playing PS5 games, making it a practical choice if you switch between several large titles throughout the week. Compatibility matters more than capacity alone: look for a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD that meets the console’s current requirements for read speed, supported capacity, and physical dimensions. Suitable heat dissipation is essential, and the drive and its cooling structure must fit within the expansion slot. An external USB drive serves a different purpose. Compatible USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but those games must be transferred to the console’s built-in storage or a compatible installed M.2 SSD before you can play them. Supported PS4 games can be played directly from compatible USB extended storage, which makes an external drive useful for keeping an older library accessible while reserving internal space for PS5 titles. Checking that distinction before buying helps you choose storage that fits your routine rather than just a drive with an appealing capacity.

Everyday convenience is worth weighing alongside speed and space. An external SSD generally offers faster transfers than an external hard drive, while a hard drive often provides more capacity for the same budget—a useful trade-off if you mostly want somewhere to keep games between playthroughs. Consider the connection requirements, the included cable, and where the drive will sit, especially if your console shares a narrow shelf with controllers and charging accessories. Internal expansion keeps the setup tidy, though installation requires following the console’s instructions and handling the drive carefully. Additional storage can also make a thoughtful gift for a regular player, particularly someone who is always clearing space before joining friends online. Before choosing it as a gift, check whether they already have an expansion drive and whether they need more room for directly playable PS5 games or a place to store less frequently used titles. The right fit takes some of the friction out of a familiar moment: settling in after a long day, reaching for the controller, and finding that the game you want is already installed and ready.
