FAQ
PS5 supports compatible PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs for internal storage expansion. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. Choose a drive that meets Sony’s PS5 compatibility requirements and includes a compatible heatsink, or add one separately.
A compatible internal M.2 SSD can store and play both PS5 and PS4 games. A USB external SSD can store PS5 games, but you must transfer them to the console’s built-in storage or an installed M.2 SSD before playing. Supported PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
Yes. When you first use a compatible M.2 SSD with your PS5, the console prompts you to format it. Formatting erases existing data on the drive, so back up any files you want to keep before proceeding.
Open Settings, select Storage, then choose Console Storage and Games and Apps. Select the games you want to move and choose the M.2 SSD as the destination. You can also set the M.2 SSD as the default installation location for new games.
No. A PlayStation Plus subscription is not required to install a compatible M.2 SSD or use USB extended storage. Subscription requirements for online multiplayer, cloud saves and other PlayStation Plus features remain separate.
