For routine maintenance on loose gravel, a tow-behind driveway grader can help redistribute material and smooth shallow uneven spots. A drag mat is useful for lighter surface finishing. Small areas may be manageable with a sturdy gravel-rated landscape rake. Deep ruts, compacted potholes, or drainage problems may require heavier grading equipment, fresh gravel, and compaction.
A driveway grader typically uses rigid bars or teeth to move loose material and reduce surface ridges. A drag mat uses a flexible mesh surface for lighter grooming after material has been loosened or spread. Neither tool should be assumed to cut through a hard-packed driveway base; check the manufacturer's intended uses.
Some models are designed for ATVs, UTVs, or lawn tractors, but compatibility varies. Check the tool's hitch type, towing requirements, and permitted added weight against your vehicle's manual. Ground resistance adds to the towing load, so the attachment's weight alone does not determine whether your vehicle can handle it.
Consider your driveway width, turning space, storage space, and towing vehicle's limits. A wider tool covers more ground per pass but can be harder to manoeuvre and pull. A narrower tool may suit tighter areas, with overlapping passes used to cover the driveway.
Levelling should smooth unwanted bumps without removing the slope needed for drainage. Many driveways use a raised centre or a cross-slope to direct water away, depending on the site. If water pools or repeatedly washes gravel away, have the drainage and grading assessed rather than simply smoothing the surface.
Fall maintenance can help address loose gravel and shallow ruts before winter, provided the ground is not frozen or saturated. Clear leaves and debris first, work when the surface is workable, and preserve drainage paths. Freshly placed gravel may also need suitable compaction before freezing weather arrives.
