FAQ
The PS5 supports PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs with a Socket 3, Key M interface. M.2 SATA SSDs are not compatible. Choose an SSD that meets Sony’s PS5 expansion requirements and includes a compatible heatsink, or add a compatible heatsink separately.
Yes. A compatible M.2 SSD installed in your PS5’s expansion slot lets you download, install and play PS5 and PS4 games directly from that drive. You can also choose it as the default installation location for new games in the console’s storage settings.
An internal M.2 SSD supports storing and playing both PS5 and PS4 games. USB extended storage can store PS5 games, but you must move them back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before playing. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
Open Settings, select Storage, then choose the storage location containing your games. Under Games and Apps, select the titles you want to move and choose the option to move them to the other storage location. You do not need to download those games again.
Yes. When your PS5 first detects a newly installed M.2 SSD, it prompts you to format the drive. Follow the on-screen steps to prepare it for game storage. Formatting erases existing data on the SSD, so back up any files you want to keep beforehand.
