Start with the tool list in your furniture’s assembly instructions. Common essentials include a screwdriver with matching bits and a correctly sized hex key, also called an Allen key. A tape measure and level can help with placement and final adjustments. Some projects also call for a hammer or rubber mallet, but use these only where the instructions specify.
Only use power tools if the furniture manufacturer permits them. A cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque can help with repetitive fastening. If using a drill-driver, choose a low clutch setting and slow speed, then finish tightening by hand where appropriate. Avoid impact drivers for delicate flat-pack hardware, and use hand tools for cam locks unless the instructions say otherwise.
Match both the shape and size of the bit to the screw head. Furniture may use Phillips, Pozidriv, slotted, Robertson or hex fasteners, and similar-looking tips are not always interchangeable. The correct bit should sit securely without wobbling. Check the assembly guide rather than forcing a bit that does not fit.
That depends on the furniture hardware. Check the assembly instructions or use the supplied key as a reference. A set with both metric and imperial sizes offers more flexibility across projects. Choose a key that fits snugly, since a nearly matching size can round out the bolt head.
Work on a clean, padded surface and organize the hardware before you begin. Follow the assembly order, align parts carefully and start threaded fasteners by hand. Tighten only as directed, especially with particleboard, MDF and cam-lock fittings. If a fastener resists or panels do not line up, stop and check the instructions rather than applying more force.
Wall anchoring is a separate step from assembling the furniture. Follow the manufacturer’s anti-tip instructions and use fasteners suited to your wall construction. You may need a stud finder, level, drill and appropriate drill bit. Check for hidden wiring and plumbing before drilling, and get qualified help if you are unsure about the wall or mounting hardware.
