A random orbital sander is a useful choice for broad, flat areas such as tabletops and drawer fronts. Check whether your furniture is solid wood or veneer before choosing a tool and abrasive.
Veneer is a thin layer of wood, so aggressive sanding can wear through it. Check for loose or damaged areas first, use a gentle approach and test in an inconspicuous spot. Avoid belt sanders and coarse abrasives on thin veneer. For valuable antiques or uncertain materials, seek advice from a furniture restoration specialist before removing the finish.
Choose a clamp with an opening wide enough for your workpiece and enough throat depth to reach the joint. Bar clamps work well across chair frames and panels, while smaller clamps suit compact repairs. Use protective pads or scrap wood between the jaws and the furniture, and apply only enough pressure to hold the joint aligned. Follow the adhesive's instructions for clamping time.
Check that the sprayer supports your chosen coating and offers a suitable nozzle size and spray pattern. HVLP models can be useful for controlled application on smaller pieces, while airless models can cover larger surfaces quickly with an appropriate tip. Pneumatic spray guns need a compatible compressor, and cordless models may require a separately sold battery and charger. Confirm what is included and practise on scrap material first.
Older painted furniture may contain lead. Have unknown old paint assessed before sanding, scraping or heating it, and seek professional help if lead is suspected. For other sanding and finishing tasks, secure the piece, control dust, provide ventilation and use protective equipment suited to the material. Follow the tool and coating instructions, including precautions for spray mist, flammable vapours and safe cleanup.
