FAQ
Common types include coaxial, fixed-pitch single-rotor and collective-pitch helicopters. Coaxial models have two main rotors that turn in opposite directions. Fixed-pitch models have main rotor blades set at a constant angle, while collective-pitch models let you change the blades’ angle through the controls.
Channels represent separate control functions. A three-channel helicopter typically offers throttle, turning and forward or backward movement. Four-channel models generally add sideways movement, while models with more channels may include collective-pitch control and additional functions. Channel assignments vary by model.
Mode 1 and Mode 2 describe how control functions are arranged on the transmitter’s sticks. Mode 1 typically places throttle on the right stick, while Mode 2 places it on the left. Some transmitters let you switch modes; others have a fixed layout.
Ready-to-fly, often shortened to RTF, generally means the helicopter comes assembled with a compatible transmitter. Package contents vary, so transmitter batteries or charging accessories may still be required. Bind-and-fly models typically require a separately purchased compatible transmitter, while kits require assembly and may need additional components.
Many hobby and toy remote control helicopters use rechargeable batteries, commonly lithium-polymer packs. Depending on the design, the battery may be built in or removable. The handheld transmitter may use replaceable batteries or its own rechargeable battery. Some specialist hobby helicopters use fuel-powered engines.
