FAQ
LED TVs use an LCD panel with LED backlighting. QLED TVs add a quantum dot layer to this design to produce colour. OLED TVs use pixels that emit their own light rather than a separate backlight. Mini-LED is another term you may see; it refers to a type of backlighting used in some LED and QLED TVs.
A smart TV’s operating system determines its menus, app selection and supported connected features. Common platforms include Google TV, Roku TV, Tizen and webOS. Check whether the platform supports your preferred Canadian streaming services and whether those services require separate subscriptions.
Common HDR formats include HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. HDR10 uses fixed metadata, while HDR10+ and Dolby Vision can use metadata that changes by scene or frame. To watch content in a particular HDR format, the TV, content and any external playback device must support it.
Consider HDMI inputs for game consoles and media players, USB ports for supported media files, and Wi-Fi or Ethernet for internet access. An HDMI port with ARC or eARC can send audio to a compatible soundbar or receiver. An optical audio output may be useful for connecting other audio equipment.
Depending on the model, voice controls may work through a microphone in the remote, a built-in TV microphone or a compatible smart speaker. Supported commands can include searching for shows, opening apps and adjusting volume. Available voice assistants, account requirements and language options vary by TV platform.
