FAQ
Consider connection type, microphone design, audio controls and comfort features such as padded ear cups and an adjustable headband. For gaming, you may want positional audio support and a quick-access mute button. For calls, a boom microphone and compatibility with your preferred chat software are useful features.
USB headsets use a digital connection and typically handle audio processing through built-in hardware. A 3.5 mm headset connects to your PC’s analogue audio ports and relies on its audio hardware. Some PCs have separate headphone and microphone ports, so a headset with a combined 3.5 mm plug may require a splitter for both functions.
Wired headsets offer a direct connection without battery charging. Wireless headsets provide more freedom of movement but require charging or battery replacement. Many wireless gaming headsets use a dedicated USB receiver for low-latency audio, while Bluetooth models may be convenient for switching between a PC and other compatible devices.
Stereo headsets play audio through left and right channels. Virtual surround sound uses audio processing to simulate sound coming from multiple directions. Support can depend on the headset, operating system, software and game. Some games also offer their own spatial audio settings that work with stereo headphones.
An adjustable boom lets you position the microphone near your mouth, while a detachable or retractable microphone can be tucked away when not in use. A flip-to-mute function or dedicated mute button gives you quick control during calls. Microphone monitoring, also called sidetone, lets you hear your own voice through the headset.
