FAQ
Common connections include USB-A, USB-C, 3.5 mm audio jacks, Bluetooth and dedicated USB wireless receivers. USB connections can carry audio and microphone signals together, while some PCs have separate 3.5 mm ports for headphones and microphones that require a splitter.
Wired headsets connect through a USB port or audio jack and generally do not need battery charging. Wireless headsets use Bluetooth or a dedicated USB receiver and typically have rechargeable batteries. Some wireless models also support wired audio, but a charging cable does not always carry an audio signal.
Stereo uses left and right audio channels. Virtual surround sound processes audio to represent multiple speaker positions through headphones, while spatial audio can also represent sounds above and below the listener. Availability depends on the headset, operating system, software and game.
PC gaming headsets may have fixed, flexible, retractable or detachable boom microphones. Some include a flip-to-mute boom, while others use a mute button on the earcup or cable. Headsets with microphone monitoring let you hear your own voice through the headphones while speaking.
Depending on the model, controls may include volume adjustment, microphone mute and game-to-chat audio balance. Companion software may offer equalizer settings, microphone adjustments, lighting controls and saved audio profiles. Some features require a USB connection or a supported version of Windows.
