FAQ
A SATA SSD is a solid-state drive that uses the Serial ATA interface to connect to a computer. It stores your operating system, applications and files on flash memory rather than the spinning magnetic platters used in a traditional hard drive.
SATA SSDs communicate through the SATA interface, while NVMe SSDs use the NVMe protocol over a PCIe connection. They require compatible connections in your computer. An M.2 slot does not automatically support both types, so check which protocols your computer or motherboard accepts.
Check your computer’s service manual or motherboard specifications for SATA drive support and connection requirements. Desktop installations typically require a SATA data connection and a SATA power connector. Laptops may use a dedicated connector or adapter, and some do not support replacement storage drives.
Yes. A SATA SSD can connect through a USB enclosure or adapter designed for its connector type. Check that the enclosure supports SATA drives rather than NVMe-only drives, and follow its power requirements. You may also need to format the drive with a file system supported by the devices you plan to use.
Not necessarily. You can clone an existing system drive to a SATA SSD using compatible migration software, or perform a fresh operating system installation. Cloning must include the required boot partitions, and you may need to select the new drive in your computer’s boot settings. Back up important files before starting.
