Best Cheap PS5 SSDs

Best Cheap PS5 SSDs brings together budget-friendly storage options for players who want more room for their games without spending more than they need to. A growing library can fill a console surprisingly quickly, especially when a few large releases sit alongside sports titles, multiplayer favourites and games you keep installed for visiting friends. Extra storage makes it easier to leave those favourites ready to play instead of deciding what to delete every time something new arrives. For a shared household console, that breathing room can be particularly useful: one person’s sprawling adventure does not have to make way for someone else’s next download. The best value is not always the lowest price, though. It is the right balance of usable capacity, PS5 compatibility, cooling and warranty coverage for the way you actually play.

When comparing affordable PS5 SSDs, pay close attention to whether the drive is an internal expansion SSD or an external USB drive. A compatible internal M.2 SSD lets you store and play PS5 games directly from the added storage. External USB storage can hold PS5 games, but those games must be moved back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible installed M.2 SSD before you can play them; supported PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage. For internal expansion, look for a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD that meets the console’s current requirements, including supported dimensions and an effective cooling structure, such as a heatsink. A sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s is advised for PS5 use, but a headline speed alone does not establish compatibility. Check the drive’s full specifications and the total size with its heatsink attached. An M.2 SATA SSD is not a substitute, even if its shape looks similar.

Capacity is where a little planning can make a budget purchase feel worthwhile for years. A 1 TB drive may offer plenty of extra room for someone who rotates through a modest selection of games, while 2 TB can make more sense for players who keep several large titles installed at once. Game sizes and updates vary, so treat any advertised game count as an estimate rather than a promise. Compare the cost per terabyte, but also check whether a suitable heatsink is included: a cheaper bare drive may need an additional purchase before installation. Warranty terms and rated endurance are worth considering alongside capacity, particularly if you regularly download, move and remove games. For a gift, a compatible SSD can be a thoughtful, practical choice for a frequent player—the kind of upgrade they appreciate when a new game finishes downloading and their old favourites are still there. Confirm the recipient’s existing storage setup first, since the console has one internal M.2 expansion slot, and a new drive may replace an existing upgrade rather than add to it.
