FAQ
For drawing on paper, start with a graphite pencil, an eraser, a sharpener, and a sketchbook. A small pencil set gives you more options for light outlines and darker shading. Check the contents before choosing a kit, since erasers, sharpeners, and paper are not always included.
An HB pencil is a useful starting point for outlines and everyday practice. Softer grades such as 2B and 4B help you create darker marks and shading. You do not need a large set to begin; a few grades let you practise controlling pressure and building contrast.
Look for unlined paper intended for sketching and a size that feels comfortable to use. Spiral binding can help pages lie flat while you draw. Standard sketch paper works well for graphite practice, but check the paper's suitability before using markers or watercolour, which may need a different surface.
Paper and pencils offer a straightforward way to practise lines, shapes, and shading without setting up software. A drawing tablet is worth considering if you want to learn digital brushes, layers, and editing. Either approach can help you build drawing skills, so choose the one you are most excited to use.
Screenless pen tablets need a compatible computer or supported mobile device, and you view your artwork on that device's screen. Many drawing displays also require a connected device, even though they have their own screen. Standalone drawing tablets can run drawing apps themselves. Check the model's operating system, connection, and software requirements before buying.
Start with compatibility, a comfortable active drawing area, and a pressure-sensitive pen supported by your chosen drawing app. Shortcut buttons can make common actions easier to access. Check whether the pen and any software are included, and whether software access is a trial or requires a separate purchase.
