FAQ
PS5 supports PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs that meet Sony’s compatibility requirements. Choose a model with a compatible heat sink, or add one that meets those requirements. SATA SSDs are not supported in the console’s internal expansion slot.
You can play PS5 games directly from a compatible SSD installed in the console’s M.2 expansion slot. A USB external SSD can store PS5 games, but you must transfer them back to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD to play them. Supported PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
Yes. When you turn on your PS5 after installing a compatible M.2 SSD, the console prompts you to format it. Formatting erases any existing data on the drive, so back up anything you want to keep beforehand.
Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select the games you want to move, and choose the option to move them to M.2 SSD storage. You can also set the M.2 SSD as the default installation location for supported games under Settings > Storage > Installation Location.
No. An M.2 SSD uses the console’s dedicated expansion slot and works alongside its built-in storage. You can keep games in either location and move them between the two through the storage settings. Saved game data remains in console storage.
