FAQ
The PS5 supports PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSDs that meet Sony’s expansion requirements. SATA M.2 SSDs are not compatible. Choose a drive with a built-in heatsink or add a compatible heatsink, and confirm that the drive meets Sony’s current specifications.
A compatible internal M.2 SSD lets you install and play PS5 and PS4 games directly from the drive. A USB external SSD can store PS5 games, but you must transfer them to the console’s built-in storage or an installed M.2 SSD before playing. PS4 games can be played directly from compatible USB extended storage.
Yes. When the PS5 detects a newly installed M.2 SSD, it prompts you to format the drive for console use. Formatting erases existing data on the SSD, so back up any files you want to keep before proceeding.
Open Settings, select Storage, then choose Console Storage and Games and Apps. Select the games you want to move and choose the option to move them to M.2 SSD Storage. You can also move games back to the console’s built-in storage through the Storage menu.
Yes. Go to Settings, select Storage, then Installation Location. Choose M.2 SSD Storage as the destination for new PS5 game installations. You can set installation preferences separately for PS5 and PS4 games.
