FAQ
PS5 supports PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs that meet Sony’s installation requirements. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s, and the drive must have a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. SATA M.2 SSDs are not compatible. Check the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information before choosing a drive.
PS5 games can be stored on a compatible external USB SSD, but they must be moved to the console’s internal storage or an installed compatible M.2 SSD to play. Supported PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
Yes. When your PS5 first detects a newly installed M.2 SSD, it prompts you to format the drive for console use. Formatting erases existing data, so back up any files you want to keep beforehand. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.
Open Settings, select Storage, then choose Console Storage and Games and Apps. Select the games you want to transfer and use the option to move them to M.2 SSD Storage. Moving installed games lets you keep them without downloading them again.
Yes. Once the compatible M.2 SSD is installed and formatted, go to Settings, select Storage, then Installation Location. You can choose M.2 SSD Storage as the default location for new PS5 game installations. Existing games stay in their current location unless you move them.
