FAQ
A home theatre amplifier supplies power to passive speakers. An AV receiver combines amplification with features such as source switching, surround-sound processing and radio reception. A separate power amplifier typically works with an AV processor or a receiver that has compatible preamp outputs.
An integrated amplifier combines a preamplifier and a power amplifier, providing input selection, volume control and speaker amplification in one component. A power amplifier handles speaker amplification and relies on a separate component for volume control and source selection. Integrated amplifiers are commonly used in stereo systems, while separate power amplifiers can also form part of multichannel home theatre setups.
Separate power amplifiers commonly have RCA inputs, sometimes balanced XLR inputs, and speaker terminals. Integrated amplifiers may also include optical, coaxial, USB or HDMI ARC inputs. Connection options vary, so the amplifier’s inputs need to match the outputs available on your receiver, processor or source device.
A standalone power amplifier generally does not process surround-sound formats. An AV receiver or processor handles Dolby Atmos or DTS:X and sends the individual audio channels to the amplifier. In a separate-component setup, surround-format support belongs to the processing component rather than the power amplifier.
Yes. An amplifier can amplify audio from either music or movie sources when connected to suitable equipment. A stereo setup uses left and right audio channels, while a multichannel setup supports additional surround channels. Source selection and listening modes are usually managed by an integrated amplifier, AV receiver or separate processor, depending on the system.
