FAQ
A prebuilt keyboard comes assembled with its case, circuit board, switches and keycaps already installed. Unlike a barebones kit or a custom keyboard assembled from separate parts, it is ready to connect to a compatible device, though some features may require software setup.
Mechanical keyboards use an individual mechanical switch beneath each key, with different options for feel and sound. Membrane keyboards typically use a flexible membrane layer and rubber domes to register keypresses. The choice comes down to your preferred typing feel, sound and customization options.
Common switch types include linear, tactile and clicky. Linear switches have a smooth keystroke without a tactile bump. Tactile switches add a noticeable bump during the press, while clicky switches pair tactile feedback with a distinct clicking sound. Key feel and sound also depend on the keyboard’s construction and keycaps.
Many prebuilt keyboards allow changes to keycaps, lighting or key assignments, depending on their design and software. Hot-swappable mechanical keyboards also let you replace compatible switches without soldering. Check the keyboard’s switch socket type, keycap compatibility and software support before choosing customization parts.
Prebuilt keyboards may connect through a USB cable, Bluetooth or a dedicated wireless USB receiver. Some support multiple connection modes or let you switch between paired devices. Check compatibility with your device’s ports and operating system, as certain shortcuts and software features may vary by platform.
