FAQ
A Wi-Fi 6 router uses the 802.11ax wireless networking standard to connect compatible devices to a home network. Wi-Fi 6 operates on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Routers in this class typically also include Ethernet ports for wired connections.
Wi-Fi 6 routers generally support devices that use earlier Wi-Fi standards, including Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 4. Each device connects using a standard supported by both the device and the router. Compatibility can also depend on the router’s settings and the device’s supported security protocols.
Wi-Fi 6 uses the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, while Wi-Fi 6E extends the same wireless standard to the 6 GHz band. To connect on 6 GHz, both your router and your device must support that band. A Wi-Fi 6 device without 6E support cannot use a 6 GHz connection.
Common connections include a WAN port for linking the router to a modem or optical network terminal and LAN Ethernet ports for connecting wired devices. Some models also include USB ports for supported storage or printer-sharing functions. Port types, counts and supported functions vary by model.
A standalone Wi-Fi 6 router usually connects to equipment supplied or approved by your internet service provider. Cable and DSL services typically use a modem, while fibre services commonly use an optical network terminal. Some provider gateways combine modem and router functions in one unit, so your setup depends on your internet connection and existing equipment.
