Best PS5 Expansion Drives

A growing game library can make console storage feel crowded surprisingly quickly. Between large downloads, updates, and the next game everyone is talking about, choosing what to delete can become an unwelcome part of settling in to play. The Best PS5 Expansion Drives bring together storage options for players who want more room for new adventures without constantly making space by removing old favourites. The most important distinction is between an internal expansion drive and external USB storage. A compatible internal M.2 solid-state drive lets you install and play PS5 games directly from the added storage, making it a practical choice for keeping frequently played titles ready to launch. An external USB drive serves a different purpose: it can store PS5 games, but those games must be transferred back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible installed M.2 SSD before you can play them. Compatible PS4 games can run directly from supported external USB storage. Knowing that difference helps you choose a drive that fits the way you actually use your library, rather than simply picking the largest capacity.

For internal expansion, compatibility deserves as much attention as speed or storage space. Look for a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD that meets the console’s requirements, including supported capacity, physical dimensions, and heat dissipation. An M.2 SATA drive is not a substitute, even if its shape looks similar. A sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s is recommended, but the number on the packaging is only part of the picture: the drive and its cooling structure also need to fit inside the expansion bay. A model with a compatible heatsink already attached can simplify shopping and installation, while a bare drive requires a suitable cooling solution. Think about capacity in terms of your habits. Someone who focuses on one or two games at a time may need less additional room than a household sharing a console across sports games, sprawling adventures, and multiplayer favourites. Larger games and their updates can take up substantial space, so leaving room beyond your current library can make the upgrade more useful over time. Compare cost per terabyte alongside compatibility, warranty coverage, and capacity rather than paying extra for a headline speed that may offer little noticeable difference during everyday play.

External storage can be particularly useful when your library includes plenty of games you want to keep without downloading them again. Picture a familiar Friday evening: friends are ready to revisit a game you have not touched in months, and its installation files are already stored nearby rather than waiting on a lengthy download. Transfers still take time, but keeping games on a supported USB drive can reduce repeat downloads, especially where internet speeds or data allowances are limiting factors. External SSDs generally offer faster transfers than external hard drives, while hard drives often provide more capacity for the same spend. Check the console’s USB storage requirements and the included cable before choosing, and remember that formatting a drive for game storage erases its existing contents. Expansion storage can also make a thoughtful gift for a frequent player, a student setting up a gaming space, or a family whose console serves several people. Confirm whether the recipient needs ready-to-play internal capacity or external storage for a larger collection; that small detail is what turns a generous gift into an upgrade they will use regularly.
