FAQ
A modem connects your home to your internet service provider, while a wireless router creates a local network for your devices using Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Some internet providers supply a gateway that combines both functions in one device.
Dual-band routers typically use the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. Tri-band routers add another band, which may be an additional 5 GHz band or a 6 GHz band, depending on the model. Your devices must support a particular band to connect to it.
A mesh Wi-Fi system consists of a main router and additional units, often called nodes, that work together as one home network. These units typically share a Wi-Fi network name and are managed through a single app or interface. Depending on the system, nodes can connect to one another wirelessly or through Ethernet.
The WAN or internet port typically connects the router to a modem or another internet source. LAN ports connect wired devices such as computers, gaming consoles, printers and network switches. Some routers have configurable ports that can serve either role.
Most home wireless routers offer a mobile app, a browser-based interface or both. These tools commonly let you change the Wi-Fi network name, view connected devices and adjust network settings. Some models require an account for app-based management, while others also offer local access through a web browser.
