FAQ
Look for a camera with RAW photo capture, 4K video, manual exposure controls and autofocus options for both stills and video. In-body image stabilization, an articulating screen, microphone input and headphone output are also useful features. Check which features are available in your preferred shooting modes.
Mirrorless cameras use an electronic viewfinder or rear screen to display the scene directly from the imaging sensor. DSLR cameras use a mirror and optical viewfinder for still photography, switching to the rear screen for video capture. Both support interchangeable lenses, but mirrorless systems generally offer more video-focused features and newer lens options.
Zoom lenses offer flexible framing, while prime lenses have a fixed focal length and often feature wider maximum apertures. Wide-angle lenses are commonly used for landscapes and interiors, standard lenses for everyday scenes, and telephoto lenses for distant subjects. For video, consider lenses with quiet autofocus, manual focus control and minimal focus breathing.
Resolution describes the detail in a video frame, while frame rate describes how many frames are captured each second. Common options include 4K resolution and frame rates of 24, 30 or 60 frames per second. Bit depth, codecs and log profiles affect colour information, file handling and editing flexibility. Confirm that your editing software supports the formats you plan to use.
Many cameras support external microphones through a 3.5 mm microphone input, a compatible accessory shoe or a supported USB connection. Connection options vary by camera, so check microphone compatibility before choosing accessories. A headphone output and manual audio level controls let you monitor sound and adjust input levels during video capture.
