Everything you need to know when shopping for a TV.

Not sure what kind of TV is right for you? Let us help you find the right technology for you.

Things to consider when buying a TV

1. TV size.

Choose a TV size based on the viewing distance and the room size. Large screens are best for immersive experiences, small screens for close viewing.

2. TV room lighting.

Consider how much light your TV room typically gets. QLED and Mini-LED TVs are great in well-lit rooms; OLED TVs excel in darker rooms.

3. TV content.

For movies and shows, look for a TV with high resolution, colour accuracy, and contrast. For gaming, add low input lag and a high refresh rate.

4. More Features.

Ensure you get enough HDMI ports. Also check out HDR (for enhanced contrast and colour accuracy), higher refresh rates (for fast-paced content), and smart capabilities (for streaming).

TV technologies explained

What's an OLED TV?

Best for:

  • Stunning picture quality.
  • Perfect blacks, vibrant colours.
  • Exceptional in dark rooms.
  • Outstanding contrast ratios.
  • Wide viewing angles.

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) is a display technology that uses organic compounds to emit light. As there is no backlight, the result is pure blacks, stunning colours, and thin screens, making OLED TVs the premium choice for lifelike, immersive viewing of movies, sports, gaming, and more.

What's a Mini-LED TV?

Best for:

  • Exceptional picture quality.
  • Deep blacks, vibrant colours.
  • Outstanding brightness levels.
  • Excellent in bright rooms, but also impressive in dark.
  • High contrast ratio.

Mini-LED TVs use tiny LEDs to backlight an LCD screen for more precise lighting control and reduced blooming compared to a regular LCD or LED screen. They're excellent TVs for gaming and are a fantastic choice for movies, sports, and general TV viewing in bright rooms.

What's a QLED TV?

Best for:

  • High-quality picture.
  • Lifelike, brilliant colours.
  • High peak brightness.
  • Great in bright rooms.
  • Reduced risk of burn-in.

QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode) TVs include a layer of light-emitting quantum dots (tiny semiconductors) between an LED backlight and an LCD screen to produce a realistic, high-contrast picture. They're a great, budget-friendly choice for rooms with natural light.
