Best Buy Canada Brings Robotic Automation to its Langley Distribution Centre
Sixty robots, more than 50,000 bins and a kilometre of conveyor now power fulfillment on Canada’s West Coast.
Best Buy Canada has flipped the switch on AutoStore at its Langley, B.C. distribution center, bringing robotic storage and retrieval to the west coast hub that helps keep Canadians supplied with the tech they love.
Langley is Best Buy Canada’s second AutoStore site, following the launch at its Brampton, Ontario distribution center last year. AutoStore is a high-density automated storage and retrieval system where inventory lives in stacked bins inside an aluminum grid, and robots travel across the top of that grid, lifting bins and delivering them directly to team members at pick-and-replenish workstations.
Langley AutoStore’s scale is clear in the numbers behind its launch:
- 50,655 Bins in the Grid - Enough storage locations to hold inventory for tens of thousands of products, all organized within a highly dense automated storage system.
- 60 Robots on the Move - Sixty autonomous robots work above the grid, retrieving inventory and keeping product flowing to teams around the clock.
- If the vertical rise served by all eight spirals were stacked on top of one another, they would reach approximately the height of the Malahat SkyWalk tower on Vancouver Island.
- The Langley DC includes approximately 1.22 km of conveyor system, enough to stretch the length of more than 12 football fields placed end-to-end.
- 8 Spiral Conveyors and over a 1.2KM of conveyance move products efficiently throughout the facility and route items to their final destination.
AutoStore is part of a broader modernization of Best Buy Canada’s distribution network that pairs a new warehouse management system with automation, replacing systems that had been in place for more than two decades. Automation supports 300 stores across the country providing faster replenishment and improved order accuracy, ensuring that our products are available to customers in a timely fashion.
The impact is just as meaningful inside the building. The AutoStore grid brings product to the person instead of sending the person to the product, the work involves far less walking, bending and climbing, and new team members can be trained in hours rather than weeks.
Langley’s launch follows a year-long transformation journey at the site, from the rollout of a new warehouse management system to preparing the building for this next generation of automation.
